Size up the Competition
Big and Small
A wall painting at the west end of the building illustrates mammoths and living elephants all shown at life sizes. Go stand next to the pygmy mammoth … it is smallest of the North American mammoths yet it is as tall as or taller than most visitors to The Mammoth Site. Take a look at each size and then note the largest is the Columbian mammoth, the one that was entrapped in the sinkhole pond behind you. Pygmy mammoths are not found onsite but our scientists are studying the remains from Channel Islands of Southern California. You will find more information about the pygmy mammoth and the Channel Islands excavation in the Exhibit Hall when you are finished with your Bonebed tour. A good position to take an overall picture of this mural is up the ramp at Station 7, just up the path from where you are right now. Continue round the walkway.
